AREA OF SUPPORT: Summer School

Building on our evidence-based A2i professional support system for teachers, Learning Ovations is pleased to offer A2i Summer to districts and community-based organizations seeking to help K-3 students recover from pandemic-related learning loss while placing each student on an individualized path toward 3rd grade reading proficiency.

A2i Summer is aligned with new federal pandemic relief funds to address learning loss and can be implemented by both schools and community organizations:

  • District Summer School: A2i Summer can be implemented as a stand-alone summer school offering or as an aligned jumpstart that connects directly to our A2i Professional Support System in the fall.

  • Summer and After School Providers: A2i Summer can be integrated into existing summer and after school programs to provide students with individualized literacy support based on their unique needs.

  • Community-wide Continuum: A2i Summer can also be used alongside A2i Professional Support System and our home-based Reading Checkup for parents, providing aligned literacy support throughout the school day and year.

A2i Summer is a literacy support system that combines an instructor-facing web-based program with guidance and coaching to ensure teachers or counselors get the support they need to provide individualized instruction to students. A2i Summer is designed to bring the science of reading and the research-base behind the A2i Professional Support System directly to summer program providers. Programs using A2i Summer will need to be operating for a minimum of six weeks to ensure accurate progress monitoring. This tool is composed of three parts:

  1. Assessments: Students take brief, adaptive assessments to determine their reading levels at the beginning of summer programming to inform instructional recommendations. Students then complete the assessments in the final week of summer programming (a minimum span of 6 weeks is required between testing instances to ensure accurate progress monitoring) to inform families of further instructional recommendations that can take place in the home.

  2. Instructional Recommendations: Summer instructors receive research-based recommendations based on each student’s instructional needs identified by the assessments.

  3. Learning Activities: The summer instructor accesses individualized instructional activities and facilitates small group or individual instruction; virtually and/or in-person.

  1. Staff Training: Learning Ovations literacy experts train and support the summer program instructors (whether credentialed teachers or program staff).

Summer instructors receive a comprehensive 90 minute initial training, access to online training materials, and have on-demand access to a dedicated project management team throughout the summer program.

  2. Curriculum: Additional lessons and materials are regularly being added to the A2i Summer activity bank. If specific materials or curricula would benefit your specific organization or district in using A2i Summer, select materials may be added as timeline permits. Specifics will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and may result in an additional cost. Please let us know if you are interested in this option!

  3. Data: A2i Summer provides pre- and post- assessment data to evaluate program effectiveness.

  • Student online access for A2i Assessments

  • Instructor computer access to A2i platform to access student information, recommendations, lesson planning and online resources

  • Instructor needs access to printers to prepare student activities from lesson menu

  • Site contact to coordinate training and ongoing support across site implementation

  • Instructor needs time for initial training (90 minutes)
